News; Home Schooling – why online learning is becoming the normPublished: Thursday 28 January, 2010
More and more parents are taking their children out of school and using their PCs as a tool for online courses.
Why do parents take on this responsibility? In comparison to public schools, online learning is a perfect alternative to providing children with a good education. Online courses are much cheaper in comparison to the hefty fees associated with private schooling where costs are incurred for school uniforms, books and term fees. Another advantage to online learning is that the home can be a peaceful haven to sit and study. Students enjoy working on their PC’s without any distractions plus they can focus on their education without having to conform to peer pressure. Teaching a child online also frees up more time for parents as there are no rigid early morning breakfast dashes or ties to a rigid school timetable until ‘little Johnny’ reaches sixteen years of age. Online education is also a great way to bond with children as parents are able to see how well their children learn and discover where their weaknesses lie. When difficulties are spotted, the internet will provide scores of exercises to help overcome these problems and nurture students into becoming independent and free spirited individuals. Online courses are available through all stages of the National Curriculum. In many cases software is asynchronous which means that learners can select the appropriate level for their learning abilities and even progress higher. In comparison to a state school, online learning allows a child to progress as quickly as he/she is able, whereas in a state school system, children are pigeon holed and all work at a set pace, thus leaving little room for advancement. In many cases, pupils have studied for GCSEs in less than two years. Online learning makes it fair for slower learners as well as the more advanced as pupils are never left behind, they can simply work at a pace which is comfortable for them. Online courses are a fun, stimulating and enjoyable way for children to learn without the stigma attached to a classroom environment. The internet is buzzing with video, audio and hands on projects. In many cases, children will feel that they are playing with their favourite computer game rather than actually learning. No more stuffy classrooms with a teacher passively rambling through an explanation. Online learning brings education alive with dazzling multimedia to make the world a fascinating place in which to learn. |
