News; The benefits of online learningPublished: Wednesday 30 December, 2009
At present, over four million students are studying online and this figure is set to increase on a yearly basis. With the recent change in economic climate, students young and old are looking for alternative ways to improve their education and thus advance their careers. But what are the advantages to online learning in comparison to a traditional classroom?
An online course creates flexibility and makes learning easily accessible. Students are able to fit their everyday commitments around their studies and thus focus on their education at a time when they are less likely to be distracted. The beauty with online learning is that courses do not have to be based in one specific place or country so students who travel can still take advantage of learning even if they are on holiday or need to travel for business purposes. Another reason why online learning is so popular is the fact that materials are always readily available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students have the peace of mind in knowing that they can re-read or listen to explanations, discussions and lectures anytime of the day or night. In comparison to a classroom environment, an online course gives students a form of private one to one tuition at a day/time that is convenient to them where they can devote their full attention to their online course without any distractions. Many students appreciate the fact that an online course can be studied from the comfort and safety of their chosen environment. Students who are less talkative or shy are more likely to take part in online discussions as they can remain anonymous and feel less intimidated by other participants. In many instances, students who are studying online often forget that they are interacting with students from all walks of life, and in many parts of the world. Working online builds up a special bond between teacher and student as the two are able to communicate via email or through online chat services such as Skype. This allows both student and teacher to address any issues immediately without having to wait for college or university opening times to discuss their concerns. Online courses allow a student to choose a course which will suit their needs. Whether they opt for a more structured instructor led online course or a self study course, the opportunity is there to improve qualifications, start a new hobby or just have a whole heap of fun! |
