This course will acquaint you with cultural changes in business styles and show you how to communicate effectively on a global level.
Topic 1 Communicating Across Cultures
A seminar examining cross-cultural business practices. This tutorial examines cultural differences (and a few similarities), talking about taboos and cultural assumptions and how to deal with them. Students will be given an understanding of differing cultural communication styles along with the essentials of effective teleconferencing.
Topic 2 Global Work
This is a tutorial dealing with the effects of globalisation on the work market. It analyzes this defining trend of our time, in terms not only of its macro effects on the global workplace but the way it will affect each worker individually. The seminar will give students a fuller understanding of the workings of the global market and the tools needed to negotiate it successfully.
Topic 3 Global Work in China (Interview)
Dr. Mary O'Hara-Devereaux, Director at the Institute for the Future, leads this tutorial on the immense influence of China on the business community. The seminar will give students an understanding of the Chinese workplace, the challenges of working in and with China, and will recommend strategies for working with the Chinese.
Topic 4 Presenting Globally
This is a seminar on the complexities and skills of cross-cultural presentation. The tutorial will teach the student how to give presentations that appeal and persuade equally from area to area of the global market, from creating materials for global presentations to avoiding unfortunate gestures.
Topic 5 The Influence Edge in Cross-Cultural Situations
This is a tutorial exploring the skills involved in influencing across cultures. Concepts such as high and low context cultures, credibility and influence are examined and analyzed, giving students the tools they need to win new customers, satisfy existing ones and to influence cross-culturally.
